The Paradox Tote is all about juxtaposition, about celebrating life’s wonderful little paradoxes. Rustic yet refined, understated but outspoken, unique yet familiar, daring but grounded. The strange paradox that life’s clearest, most comforting lessons are learned at its lowest points. That the greatest joys in life lead to its greatest sorrows. For every sunrise, a sunset. For every birth, a death. For every love, a loss. These are the lessons that echoed in my mind as I designed this bag.
This Paradox Tote is made from a classic black vegetable tanned cowhide that’s been tumbled to give it a broken-in, lived-in look and feel. The tumbled veg tan gives the bag a pebbled texture, and a comfortable slouchy silhouette that’s reminiscent of your favorite old pair of jeans. The goal was to create something as rugged and durable as a new pair of boots, yet as comfortable and inviting as an old leather armchair.
For this version of the Paradox, we added a set of tucked strap billets with solid brass D-rings. The billets allow this bag to be carried with a removable shoulder strap, use a carabiner to clip on a set of keys, or to secure the opening and protect your valuables when wandering.
The handles are made from thick, American oak-tanned cowhide that are rich with character. amd strong and durable enough to carry the weight of the world without complaint—just like you. We purposefully chose straps with heavy natural scars and character lines to match the broken-in look and feel of the bag. Details like solid copper rivets, solid brass D-rings, hand-stitched turned edges, and double stitched seams ensure that the Paradox Tote will endure, even when the moment doesn’t.
